CELEBRATING SEWARD PARK WITH A ROOFTOP GALA

Seward Park Conservancy hosted our annual gala on October 24, and it was a wonderful success!

The evening took place on Nine Orchard’s beautiful rooftop space. We celebrated Seward Park with drinks, delicious desserts from some of our favorite neighborhood spots, and spectacular nighttime views of the city. There was even a pollinator-themed candy bar to commemorate Seward Park Meadow’s official Pollinator Place designation!

We were honored that so many members of our community joined us, including Manhattan Borough Commissioner for NYC Parks Anthony Perez and City Council Member for District 1 Christopher Marte. We are grateful for their support of Seward Park Conservancy and are looking forward to working with them in the future.

Thanks to the generosity of all our guests and sponsors, that future is looking brighter than ever for Seward Park! With the money we raised, we will be able to provide more native plants for the Pollinator Place and garden beds, more educational and arts programming for our community, and more upkeep for this jewel of the Lower East Side. We can start building permanent fences and public pathways for the meadow, advocating for a renovation of the children’s playground, and renovating the historic Schiff Fountain for the entire neighborhood.

We especially want to thank our benefactor, Nine Orchard, for hosting us in the historic Jarmulowsky Bank building. This grand building - and its iconic cupola - has been a symbol of our neighborhood since 1912. In fact, part of the original Jarmulowsky Bank building lives on in Seward Park — the ornate terra cotta planters throughout Seward Park are repurposed pieces of the building’s original decorative frieze. We couldn’t think of a more meaningful or beautiful place to celebrate, and thank Nine Orchard for welcoming us!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEWARD PARK!

Last month marked an exciting anniversary — Seward Park celebrated its 119th birthday! Seward Park first opened on October 17, 1903, becoming the first municipally-built playground in the country. At the time, the park included not only playground and gymnastic equipment, but also a running track and children’s farm garden, with a large limestone and terra-cotta recreation pavilion built the following year. There were also hired attendants who supervised the playground equipment — Seward Park was so popular that over 10,000 children visited everyday!

COMING UP IN THE PARK
