SEWARD PARK IS PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT PICK

We are thrilled that Seward Park is the New York Junior League’s choice for their annual Playground Improvement Project!

First started in 1992, the Playground Improvement Project is the NYJL’s signature annual volunteer-powered project. In partnership with NYC Parks, NYJL volunteers help revitalize and restore a new park or playground each year in an effort to make outdoor community spaces safe and accessible to all New Yorkers.

Over the course of five weekends this spring, volunteers will be working hard to revitalize our beautiful park. The first two weekends have been a great success — volunteers began scraping and repainting benches, and the Schiff Fountain was cleared of trash and drained of standing water. The NYJL is planning to fill the fountain with soil and native flowering plants to keep it clean and beautiful!

Additionally, volunteers have taken on the task of removing Lesser Celandine from the park. An invasive plant also known as “fig buttercup,” these small yellow flowers make it difficult for native plants to grow in our park.

It’s not just Seward Park getting spruced up this year — for the first time, the Playground Improvement Project will encompass nearby neighborhood green spaces, such as Little Flower Playground and Hamilton Fish Park. We’re honored that the NYJL has chosen our community for their project and look forward to assisting them throughout the month!

THE THING ABOUT BEES

Librarian Marilyn leads the story-time walk around our pollinator place meadow.

We had so much fun at our outdoor children's book walk last Saturday! Marilyn, our incredible librarian of the day from Seward Park Library, led attendees on a walk around the Seward Park meadow while reading from The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter by Shabazz Larkin. This was followed by an introduction to our pollinator place by Seward Park Conservancy member Bridget and a fun bee-themed craft. Thank you so much to Seward Park Library for joining us — we're looking forward to having more book walks together throughout the summer!
