SUMMER IS HERE!

Happy Summer, friends! We hope you had a beautiful Summer Solstice, and are ready to embrace the sweaty, sticky season ahead of us. We know Togo sure is! He's looking better than ever, surrounded by new plants from Citywide Nursery, thanks to the planting efforts shown above. Togo's new surroundings include Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia), Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii), Anise Hyssop (Agastaache foeniculum), Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), and Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa). Come by the park soon to check out the new additions!

This Friday: Free French Cinema in the Park

Lights...camera...ACTION! We are excited to be hosting Films on the Green once again this year at Seward Park, with showings of Casablanca Beats this Friday, July 7th, 8:30pm and French Cancan next Friday, July 14th, 8:30pm. Bring a friend and some popcorn, and enjoy French cinema on a breezy summer evening in the park!

Films on the Green is a free outdoor French film festival produced annually in NYC parks by Villa Albertine, NYC Parks, The Embassy of France, and the French American Cultural Exchange Foundation. These screenings are free and open to the publicjoin us for both if you can!

Casablanca Beats: Anas, a former rapper, is hired to teach hip hop at a cultural center in an underresourced neighborhood of Casablanca. Amidst the challenges of restrictive traditions and issues of identity, religion, and politics, Anas manages to inspire his students, fostering unity and self-expression through the transformative power of hip hop culture.

French Cancan: Set in the vibrant Belle Epoque, live entertainment entrepreneur Henri Danglard undertakes the renovation of a historic Parisian cabaret, the Moulin Rouge. Betting on the revival of the cancan dance, he turns young washerwoman Nini into a star dancer. Along the way, Danglard confronts the jealousy of his lover Lola, the fickleness of his sponsors, and the fierce competition of the Montmartre scene.

SAY HI TO OUR NEW GARDENER

Meet our new horticulture expert: Austin! You'll see him at the park weeding, watering plants, and revamping our shaded beds that were affected by last year's drought.

He previously gardened with both Madison Square Park and Governors Island, and we're grateful to have him and his expertise on board.

OUR HISTORIC PLAYGROUND

Did you know Seward Park's playground is the oldest municipal playground in the United States? Originally founded in 1903, it underwent a redesign by the NYC Parks Department in 2001, and again in 2019 as part of the Parks Without Borders project. Some of the playground's features include two large jungle gyms, a large water fountain play area (this comes in handy right about now!) with a mosaic map of the neighborhood in the center, and swing sets for kids of all ages.
