APEX FOR YOUTH SCHOLARS
STUDY
TREES IN SEWARD PARK

Students from Apex for Youth joined the Seward Park Conservancy on December 2nd to discover details about trees in our community and throughout our park. Third-graders learned about the parts of trees, the benefit they bring to the Lower East Side, and then toured Seward Park, sketching varieties including Pin Oak, Chinese Elm, Eastern White Pine and Cherry. Students also identified different kinds of trees from their bark and leaves. They then worked to calculate the age of some of our favorite varieties by using Mitchell’s Rule, measuring the circumference of the trunk in centimeters and dividing by 2.5 to get the tree’s age in years. We found trees planted when the park opened more than 120 years ago!

PREPARING THE POLLINATOR MEADOW FOR SPRING

Last month, the Seward Park Conservancy and Lower East Side Ecology Center came together with volunteers to prepare the Pollinator Meadow for Spring. In record time, we applied compost to the site, cleaned native plant seeds, and reseeded the meadow with a mix of 31 different species of wildflowers and warm-season grasses from the Greenbelt Native Plant Center, which they then generously donated to the park. Through GNPC, all of the seeds were hand collected within 75 miles of the city meaning they have extremely localized qualities making them best suited for this area. We cannot wait to see the pollinators who enjoy them throughout the year!

THANK YOU FOR HELPING PROTECT
OUR POLLINATORS ON GIVING TUESDAY

Thank you to everyone who came together to support us this Giving Tuesday. Seward Park is a community space and our community’s support is crucial to keeping it vibrant, open and thriving for everyone. With your contributions not only are we able to keep it clean, but also use native and weather-resistant plants that are good for the planet and our pollinators. Thank you for helping us keep the park a haven for our bees, butterflies, and more!
