THE DAFFODIL PROJECT

Winter might just be starting, but we already know it's going to be a colorful spring in Seward Park!

On November 6th, Seward Park Conservancy hosted our Daffodil Planting Day as part of The Daffodil Project, an initiative from New Yorkers For Parks. Thanks to an amazing group of volunteers, we were able to plant 1,200 daffodil bulbs throughout Seward Park. In addition, we planted crocus and tulip bulbs that had been generously donated to us. All together, almost 2,000 bulbs made it into the ground in just under two hours. We can't wait to see all these beautiful blossoms in just a few months!

We want to thank all of our hardworking volunteers for their help, as well as The Daffodil Project for supplying us with daffodil bulbs. The Daffodil Project has become the largest volunteer effort in New York City over the past 20 years, with over 8 million daffodil bulbs planted in that time as a living memorial to the victims of 9/11. It was an honor to be a part of the 20th anniversary season!

LOOKING BACK

2021 was an unprecedented year for all of us. We still grappled with many fears and uncertainties, but also felt hope and joy as the world began to open back up. It felt wonderful to see people start to come together again, and we are thrilled that for many, Seward Park felt like a safe place to do so. Here were some of our highlights from the past year:

  • The Seward Park meadow was in full bloom throughout the summer, and we added a new Bee House to protect our essential pollinators.
  • Movie nights returned to Seward Park, with screenings of "Raya and the Last Dragon" and "Satin Rouge."
  • In addition to our Daffodil Planting Day, we hosted numerous planting and clean-up days throughout the year thanks to a generous grant from Partnerships for Parks.
  • We partnered with Illegal Art on their community art project, Morning Sky, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

"Morning Sky" is on display on the third floor of the Seward Park Library until Dec. 17.
